the designer

The name comes from soccer my junior year in High School. I ran funny and I never scored a goal and it turned out that if you played with my name just right you got "Hott Scopkins". After a year of running around I got a job quit the team and bought a hot car.

In fact it was my penchant for hot cars, and the associated debt that, several steps down the road lead me to a BFA degree in Graphic Design from Western Michigan University.

All design work is either the fruit of professional employment at Consort Display Group in Kalamazoo, Michigan or work for friends. I am a freelance designer in the truest sense. I have yet to get paid for an outside project. (That Girl Scouts Site doesn't count.)

the photographer

It turns out that you have to take a photography class to get into the design program. If not for that I would never have figured out that one of my best methods of stress relief is to blow through about 4 rolls of film in an afternoon. Unless noted, all the photos on the site are my therapeutic endeavors.

If enough people tell you something you start to believe it. For example people told me I was insightful, and clever. Now I have a blog.

the site

Consider this some combination of playground and portfolio. All materials presented on this site represent some aspect of my creative drive. As such it's hard to tell sometimes if I should try to take this seriously or just laugh as much as possible.

The part I think I will take seriously is the copyright. If you like something, ask. I'm easy going. We can work something out. You'll get better quality images and I'll know where my work is. But ask first.

If you don't, I have a roommate studying for the bar exam.
